Home Reading

Image
Your child is bringing home a purple folder with a Home Reading book and a log book in it. They will be able to bring this folder home every night and return it to school every morning to get a new book so that they may have many opportunities to practice their reading with a variety of different books. In the Log Book, please write the date, name of the book that you read with your child and whether it was too easy, too hard or 'just right'. Home Reading should seem easy for your child, they need lots of practice at their level in order to improve their fluency and expression while reading! Happy Reading!

Noon Supervision

Hello Parents and Guardians   Ken Taylor offers noon supervision to all of our Grades 1-4 students.  In order for your child to be eligible for this service you must register using your My CBE account.  https://webapps.cbe.ab.ca/MyAccount/Account/LogOn?ReturnUrl=%2fMyAccount%2f .   Please be sure to register for the 4 day week service for $255.00.    If you do not register for noon supervision your child will need to be picked up over the noon hour. If your child rides the bus you will also need to register for bus service and pay the bussing fee of $355 for the school year.  When you register your child for the bus service they will  automatically be registered for noon supervision and both fees will apply.   Any family needing a waiver is encouraged to apply to the  City of Calgary Fair Entry Program  to prove income for a CBE waiver, as well as access other benefits of the program. This is optional for families and the CBE will will continue to accept other approved doc

Twonies for Terry and Orange shirt day

This upcoming Friday, September 29th there will be an assembly at 10:45 to kick off our Terry Fox run. We are asking students to bring a 'two'nie for Terry! Also, it is Orange Shirt Day. Here is some info on this important day: Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013.  It grew out of  Phyllis' story  of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.  The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year.  It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the

Scholastic Book Fair

Image
The Scholastic Book Fair is on this week! My class will get to go look at books on Wednesday and write a 'wish list' of any books they might ask Mom and Dad to buy for them. You are not obligated to buy books, this is only if you would like to buy books! On Thursday, the students who bring money to school will be able to go down and buy the books they wanted. The fair is also open on Thursday night during conferences and Friday during the day if parents wish to go look during those times!

Welcome to Ms. Carstairs' grade 1 classroom Blog!

Welcome to Ms. Carstairs' blog! This is your source of information on what we are working on in class and any important upcoming school events or dates. The first two weeks of grade 1 went very well, and we have been spending time getting to know the class and school rules and to know our classmates and teachers. My class has settled in well with the rules and routines and we have dove right into our learning. We have been reviewing our alphabet and letter sounds using this fun video! It helps our brains to remember things when we pair the letter or sound with a movement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59u6KaluscI We have also started to work with the most common 13 words that appear in early literature. They are: a, and, he/she, in, is, it, that, the, to, I, of, was We sing songs about these words, find them in text and hi-lite them, spell them, and read them on our story wall. For math we have started with a review of the numbers 1-10. We will continue with this un
